چکیده

46,551 participants 50 to 80 years of age were recruited from among volunteers for the American Cancer Socie~, fraternal, veterans, and employee groups in Minnesota between 1975 and 1977. Excluded from the study were persons with history of colorectal cancer, familial polyposis, or chronic ulcerative colitis, and persons who were bedridden or otherwise disabled. After stratification by age, sex, and place of residence, subjects were randomized to one of three groups: annual screening, biennial screening, or a control group.2

Fecal occult blood testing and the incidence of colorectal cancer.

OBJECTIVE The objective of this abstract is to demonstrate by life table methodology a significant reduction in the mean annual incidence rate of colorectal cancer in randomized groups with annual or biennial screening for fecal occult blood, as compared with the annual incidence rate in the control group. BACKGROUND Testing for the presence of fecal occult blood has long been used for the ea...

Colorectal cancer mortality: effectiveness of biennial screening for fecal occult blood.

BACKGROUND In 1993, a randomized controlled trial in Minnesota showed, after 13 years of follow-up, that annual fecal occult blood testing was effective in reducing colorectal cancer mortality by at least 33%. Biennial screening (i.e., every 2 years) resulted in only a 6% mortality reduction. Two European trials (in England and in Denmark) subsequently showed statistically significant 15% and 1...

Self-perceived Mental Health Status and Uptake of Fecal Occult Blood Test for Colorectal Cancer Screening in Canada: A Cross-Sectional Study

Background While colorectal cancer (CRC) is one of the most preventable causes of cancer mortality, it is one of the leading causes of cancer death in Canada where CRC screening uptake is suboptimal. Given the increased rate of mortality and morbidity among mental health patients, their condition could be a potential barrier to CRC screening due to greater difficulties in adhering to behaviours...

Clinical Inquiries. How does colonoscopy compare with fecal occult blood testing as a screening tool for colon cancer?

■ Evidence summary A Cochrane review conducted a metaanalysis looking only at FOBT for colorectal cancer screening. This review, based on published and unpublished data from 5 controlled trials, demonstrated that 3-card home FOBT conferred a reduction in colorectal cancer mortality of 16% (relative risk [RR]=0.84; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.77–0.92) and a number needed to screen of 1173 (9...

Protective effect of faecal occult blood test screening for colorectal cancer: worse prognosis for screening refusers.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS Screening for colorectal cancer (CRC) by faecal occult blood testing (FOBT) decreases CRC mortality by 15-33%. Compliance remains an obstacle to maximising the benefit of FOBT screening. We tested the hypothesis that individuals offered FOBT screening but refused would have an increased incidence and worse prognosis for CRC compared with those tested and with controls. MET...
